Apple Reportedly Set to Announce an iPhone SE with 5G this Spring
Apple could use its spring 2022 event to refresh its most affordable smartphone, the iPhone SE. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman shared in his latest newsletter that Apple might announce the third-generation iPhone SE this March or April and it will come with 5G connectivity.
“Apple gets ready for its first virtual event of 2022. Apple’s first virtual event of 2022 is coming up in just a few short months and is likely to take place in either March or April,” I’m told, Gurman wrote. “What should we expect? Probably a new iPhone SE, at least. It was at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic in April 2020 that Apple ushered in the current iPhone SE.”
In terms of design, nothing is expected to change. The third-generation iPhone SE is expected to maintain the same look visually as the iPhone SE 2020 which is reminiscent of the iPhone 8. Apart from the 5G connectivity, the new iPhone SE is expected to feature a new chip which might be the A15 from the iPhone 13. No other changes are mentioned but it won’t be a surprise if Apple increased the battery capacity to provide a balance for the high-energy draining 5G connectivity.
The iPhone SE 2020 base model currently retails for $399; Apple would want to maintain that pricing model. A change in design with a larger display or thinner bezels would mean a price hike which might be significant.
Gurman also added it’s a “near certainty that the 2022 Worldwide Developers Conference will be virtual for the third year in a row.” This shouldn’t come as a surprise as new cases of the Omicron COVID-19 variant continues to rise
